The Kind of Summer I Want This Year: 8 Things to Enjoy This Summer

Written by Christy A. Zlatkus | Jun 23, 2026 2:16:59 PM

There’s something about summer that makes even the simplest days feel a little more intentional.

In Rockville, this season has a way of pulling people outside, not necessarily for big plans, but for small moments that break up the routine. A walk that lasts a little longer than expected, a quick stop somewhere local, an afternoon that turns into something slower without planning it that way.

There are so many ways to enjoy it, whether it’s with family, friends, children, or simply on your own. There is always something to do if you allow yourself to slow down and look for it.

Some of the things that feel especially meaningful this time of year are simple, small moments that make the days feel lighter.

1.  Evening walks

Seriously underrated. The benefits of connecting with nature are endless. Whenever I do it, I genuinely return home happier and lighter. Also, the golden summer light after 6pm is something else.

Bring headphones or enjoy the birdsong. Both are valid.

2.  Farmers market

Slow down, get to know some great local brands, and grab something fresh.

You get to talk to new people, try new things, and simply feel like you are part of something. It is good for the soul in a way that’s hard to explain until you do it.

3.  Picnic at a local park

Grab a blanket, snacks, and your favorite playlist. One of the simplest and most underrated moves of summer. Kids love picnicking, and there’s always so much for them to enjoy.

4.  Pool day

Everyone loves a pool day! The sun, the water, the snacks... it’s just fun. Rockville has great options, and there’s a reason pool days feel like a reset button.

5. A playlist for driving with the windows down

The sun on your face, a good playlist, a warm breeze... it is such a mood changer. Summer road trips deserve good music, even if you’re just driving to the grocery store.

6.  Get an iced coffee

Who doesn’t love a good iced coffee? Especially during summer. Honestly, any iced beverage counts. It’s the perfect excuse to take yourself out for a treat and enjoy the weather.

7.  Ice cream

There doesn’t need to be a reason. It’s summer.

8.  A community event in Rockville

There are so many different activities happening around here, from outdoor concerts and family programs to fitness classes and nature activities. There’s genuinely something for every mood.

Check the city events calendar and pick one thing.

And whatever you do this summer, don’t forget the sunscreen.
